Mario Benjamin (Haiti)

Born in Haiti in 1964, Benjamin is a self taught painter who early into his career gained recognition for his photorealist paintings but then broke away from traditional portraiture into abstraction. In this new genre the artist adapts color, line and new materials in unconventional ways to unlock a powerful expression of his inner world. “I begin with a formal sketch, I deconstruct it until it is destroyed ...and then it appears…within the light.” Benjamin is an influential Haitian contemporary artist and has exhibited widely, including in several major biennales.
